Daily Art - Foto Friday (Week 6)

I missed posting last week's photos, but back on track finally.  I feel like I've been such a slacker with posting the last couple weeks while dealing with being sick, but hope to be better now that I'm (mostly) on the mend. I also took the opportunity this week to buy a rather large purse that will house my camera and means I can bring it with me everywhere I go. Hopefully that will lead to better photo opportunities. It's kinda funny though as it's hugely uncharacteristic of me to carry a large purse - in fact I'd prefer to never carry one at all. Yet, here I am, making the sacrifice for my art or something. Daily Art - Foto Friday (Week 3)

Three weeks in and I'm hitting my stride.  I'm constantly scanning my surroundings for photo ideas and even have a little list going on my phone.  I'm encouraged that I'm trying some new things and finding inspiration in new places.  I was half anticipating that it be a chore to remember to take a photo every day but I'm actually enjoying taking the time each day to find something to capture.  My week has a bit of an Asian theme, inspired by Chinese New Year.  Enjoy!

Daily Art - A Pacific sunset

The last 6 weeks have been pretty crazy between the holidays and my parents visiting from England. My parents were dropped off at the airport yesterday to return home and I'm once again faced with a long time between visits.

On Sunday, my parents and I took a little drive to Santa Monica, where we were lucky enough to make it in time for the most beautiful sunset. So, as the sun set on their trip, the sun also set across the ocean, and I was happy to realize that I had my little point and shoot in my purse to capture this.  Amazing how so much beauty and color can fill just a few minutes every day.  It's like a paint brush was swept across the sky.

Daily Ramblings - An identity crisis

Not me, the weather in Los Angeles that is.  We had an incredibly mild summer and only a few days here and there that involved the disgustingly hot weather that we usually dread.  Of course, the second it turns to "fall" (as if defining seasons is of any particular relevance in Southern California), the weather totally didn't get the memo about what it was supposed to be doing.  After the hottest day on record in downtown Los Angeles, today I'm driving home in my summer dress (might as well milk it), and I'm greeted by rainbows, thunder, lighting, rain and sunset all at the same time.  It's still 80 something degrees out there.  So, mother nature, what's going on?!

While everybody I know seems to have posted a mobile upload of a rainbow on their Facebook page at the same time, here's a couple of pictures from my front door...

Daily Art - Tequila Sunrise

On the heels of my previous post, as promised, here's the first in my Daily Art series, showcasing some of my favorite photographic prints from my portfolio and telling you a little bit about each. 

Tequila Sunrise

Several years ago I was doing my very first wedding photography shoot for a friend.  They were getting married on the beach in Huntington Beach, CA.  She'd asked me to join them the night before so I could check out the location and be at the rehearsal dinner.  As we were walking from the quick rehearsal on the beach to the restaurant for dinner, I was lucky enough to have a moment to snap this shot and capture the beautiful sunset; casting the birds, trees and others enjoying the scene, into silhouette.  I was really hoping that the colors would be as vibrant the following day so that I could perhaps get some amazing sunset shots with the couple after the wedding, but we weren't that lucky.

When I look at this, it seems to be the epitome of a Californian sunset.  A few minutes before, or a few minutes after, and I wouldn't have been able to capture that light and shadows in the same way.  To me that's one of the most wonderful things about photography.  It's a snapshot of a moment in time that will never appear exactly the same way again.
