For months now, I've been putting together a bag of clothing for donation. It was hanging out in the hall closet and occasionally, I'll pull something that I haven't worn in a year or so out of my closet and throw it in there. This weekend, I decided that it was time to get rid of this bag, and be a little more severe with purging my closet - resulting in 5 bags and a box filled with shirts, dresses, sweaters, shoes.... It definitely feels good to be rid of these things, and hopefully Goodwill will make good use of them.
How often do you purge your closet? I suspect I should do it more often! I don't tend to shop for clothing a lot, so now I have a nice gaping
space where new clothes are supposed to go I guess. Perhaps this will
encourage me to actually use some of the sewing patterns I've got
stashed away.
I think I mentioned that husband got himself a new job about a month ago. We're thrilled and I'm much more content knowing that he's enjoying being part of the workforce again. Of course, the poor guy has a terrible commute. It's 16 miles but, to put it in perspective, in Los Angeles traffic it actually takes less time for a plane to get to Las Vegas. Every day, husband's been sitting in stop and go traffic in his old car - we shall call it "The Beast" (as dubbed by my brother). Other than the fact it still had forward propulsion, that car has few redeeming qualities. In fact, the broken air-conditioning, the giant crack in the windshield, and the fact that the passenger airbag had deployed (during a 2 mph "accident" a couple of years back), meant it was very much living up to it's name. We knew that a new car was necessary and, seeing as The Beast decided to spring a radiator fluid leak on the way home last Friday, this weekend was the time!
After several hours this weekend sitting in car dealerships, we are happy welcome our new Kia Optima to the family. I am by no means a car geek (unless you count my love of BBC's Top Gear), but I'm so impressed by the look of this car and the features that come stock on the base model. When we started thinking about cars, it has to be said that Kia was never a brand I had even thought of. In fact, the only thing I knew about Kia is that they let hamsters drive their cars. I want a hamster that can do that - really, who doesn't?
P.S. - While we are [almost] sad to say farewell to The Beast, we're happy to say that we're going to be donating it so it can finish life contributing to a good cause. :)
One beautiful thing about weaving is that it takes a fraction of the time to make a scarf compared to knitting, or even crochet. Last night, after only a few hours of actual weaving, I finished up my first scarf on my Cricket loom and made the super cute twisted fringe. Something went slightly wrong with my tension in places as there are slight wiggly spots in the center section of the scarf (between the two blue stripes), and I wonder if that may have been a result of switching from the grey to the blue and back while warping the loom. Seeing as I used acrylic for the scarf, I decided to steam block it using a damp pressing cloth, which helped straighten it out a little bit at least.
I'm probably going to pass this along for donation to one of the various charities that we collect for at work as they often request synthetic fibers because they're easy to care for.
I definitely made a few mistakes while working on this scarf, which I'm grateful for as it gives me more knowledge to attack the next project with. Now I just have to decide what yarns I want to use!
